Recreating Ecologies of Knowledge

Keynote by Nana Oforiatta Ayim

Keynote lecture of the performative discussion event UNEXPECTED LESSONS – Decolonizing Memory and Knowledge, June 11-12 2021, at Academy of the Arts, Berlin, Nairobi and online.

We are living through a time of crisis: crisis of health, of environment, of race, and justice – with more and more becoming aware that the dynamics of the world as they have been imagined so far cannot prevail, and that a transformation of relational interdependence, i.e. one that encompasses the cultural, political, financial, social, and spiritual is due. In the cultural sphere, we see this most in the field of so-called Universal Museums built almost entirely on Imperialist models of subject-object, currently being deconstructed and reimagined through the discourses of decolonisation and restitution.

How can this model of dominance and one-sidedness be replaced with dynamics more relational and pluralistic, more equitable and inclusive?
